ORC1324 Germanicus "sestertius" VF 


Germanicus, Æ medallic as, (18.58g) struck under Caligula, GERMANICVS CAESAR TI AVG F DIVI AVG N Bare head left, of large proportion. / C CAESAR DIVI AVG PRON AVG P M TR P IIII P P around large SC. Unpublished and apparently unique, cf. RIC (Gaius) 50. VF, smoothed dark brown-green patina, heavy and broad 34mm flan.

Puzzling. RIC 54 (Caligula / Vesta seated for the same year) notes, "the BM coin is on a large flan (22.36g)." The obverse die has a portrait of the largest style, and the 34mm coin gives the impression of a sestertius. It is not clear how it would have been valued in ancient times.
